Candidate Sanford Proposes Budget Process Overhaul
01/13/2009

Paul Sanford, Republican candidate for the Alabama Senate in the March 3rd election, today proposed a new approach to budget planning for the Alabama Legislature which he said would avert shortfalls in the future. Mr. Sanford released his plan today at a news conference in Huntsville.

Under Sanford’s plan, the current practice of planning budgets on a projection of future revenues would be replaced with basing budgets on revenues from the preceding year. “If the state had used prior year budgeting for the 2006-2008 budgets, Alabama would currently be sitting on $3.1 billion in budget surpluses—more than enough to help us weather these tough times,” Sanford said.

State budget hearings began today in Montgomery. Governor Riley released a Deficit Prevention Plan several weeks ago, and Sanford said, “I applaud the Governor for his plan, but I’d like to go a step farther because tough economic times demand new thinking.” Sanford said his approach to changing the method the legislature drafts budgets would “put us in a strong financial position for when the storms do come.”

Mr. Sanford is seeking the senate seat vacated by Congressman Parker Griffith. He and his wife, Danielle, own little Paul’s Barbecue in Huntville. They have two children.
